Q & A for registration proceedures

Dear Future EMCC Mighty Lion Band Member,

Here are some helpful thoughts on where to begin your registration process as you begin your college career at East Mississippi Community College. These are the steps you need to take to get it all started.

If I or Mr. King can be of any assistance, please let us know.

2.
Transcripts
  • Request official transcripts from the high school or last college you attended. Your last school will send them by mail unless you make other arrangements. If you hand-deliver your transcripts, they must be in a sealed envelope.
  • If you’re not a high school graduate, you don’t have official transcripts. But that’s OK. You can take the GED test through EMCC Adult Basic Education. A passing GED score can be used to substitute for this requirement.
  • If you graduated from a high school that is not accredited, you can take the GED test or submit an ACT composite score of 20 or higher.
  • Transfer students must submit transcripts from all previous colleges attended in order to receive financial aid. (If you're planning to take a course or program that has an ACT prerequisite, you will need to make sure that you've sent your ACT scores to us. They are usually not included on college transcripts.)

Melinda Sciple, (662) 476-5040
Karen Briggs, (662) 476-5041
3.
Entrance Exams
EMCC needs your score on one of two entrance exams used to help with placement and scholarships:
  • All incoming students under the age of 21 must take the ACT test. If you haven’t taken the test on one of the national test dates, you can take the ACT through EMCC’s Counseling Office. We administer the ACT to incoming EMCC students only.
  • Students under 21 who are not satisfied with their ACT scores can choose to take the COMPASS test instead of re-taking the ACT.
  • If you are over 21, the COMPASS test can replace the ACT as an admission requirement. And, like the ACT, you can take the COMPASS test through EMCC’s Counseling Office.
  • There are a couple of exceptions to
the ACT vs. COMPASS question. The Nursing and Funeral Services programs require the ACT.
  • Students entering two Career-Technical programs, Automotive Technology and Industrial Maintenance, are also required to take the Bennett Mechanical Test.
Questions:

Debi Valentine, (662) 243-1925
Jenny Box, (662) 476-5088

Financial Aid
This link to EMCC’s Financial Aid Office includes information about how to apply for federal and state student aid, EMCC scholarships and Federal Direct Student Loans.
  • At a minimum, students arriving at EMCC to register should have already completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form online. First, get a PIN number; then fill out the application.
  • Residents of EMCC’s six-county district who graduated in the most recent past semester from an accredited public, private or home school may also qualify for EMCC’s Tuition Guarantee program.
  • Here's a listing of tuition and fees.
Questions:
Jim Gibson, (662) 476-5078
Garry Jones, (662) 243-2643
Gypsy Gray, (662) 243-1928
5.
Student Housing
Students at the Scooba campus can choose to live in a dormitory. Space is limited, and it fills up quickly. If you're a new student and want to live on campus, submit a Residential Housing Application as early as possible. Returning students should use this form.
Questions:

Tony Montgomery,
(662) 476-5062
6.
Disability
Support
Services
If you have a disability, and EMCC needs to make arrangements to accommodate your needs, visit Disability Support Services for information and applications.
Questions:
Cathy Kemp, (662) 243-1979
Maggie Dale (662) 476-5048
7.
Note for returning students
  • Review your LEO account, and make sure there are no restrictions to registration, such as a Business Office hold, a disciplinary hold or an incomplete admissions hold. Any of these can delay the registration process.
  • If it has been over a year since you last attended EMCC, you will need to reapply for admission.

Ready?
Have you gathered up all your documents? Filled out the appropriate forms? OK, then you're ready to arrive in person to register ... and you'll be glad you took the time to do your homework. For instructions about what to do once you're here, visit our On-site registration guide.

Registration: You've arrived on campus ... now what?

Registration at EMCC will go much more smoothly if you're prepared for it. If you haven't already visited our "What to do before you leave home" link, now would be a good time.

Do the steps in the order they appear, because each step depends on the one before it,    and it's no fun standing in the same line twice.

If you've waited until the last two days of registration, which we don't recommend,    there will be signs posted and people there to answer questions. Just find someone wearing an EMCC badge and ask them where to go.

Admissions
They'll review your materials, and make sure you've done everything on the "What to do before you leave home" checklist. If you haven't, some steps can be completed along the way ... it will slow you down, and might irritate the people in line behind you, but it can be done. But if you're missing these, you can't proceed at all:
  • New students: ACT score and high school transcript
  • Transfer students: Transcripts from the last school you attended.
At the end of your visit, they'll give you a Matriculation Form.
Early birds:

  • New students: Discuss what classes you need to take with a counselor. See notes to right.
  • Returning students: Go see your assigned academic advisor.
  • Athletes: Meet with academic advisor Brittany Wagner-White.
At the end of your visit, they'll give you a copy of your schedule.

During the final two days of registrarion:

3.
Financial aid
Meet with a financial aid advisor about the kinds and amounts of assistance you can receive. If you haven't completed the Financial Aid steps on the "What to do before you leave home" list, you'll have to do them now.
At the end of your visit, they'll give you a print-out of your financial aid package, including what you owe.
You'll also get a parking decal.
Early birds:
Financial Aid Office, Administration Building
During the final two days of registration:

A business office employee will review your financial aid print-out, and you'll make payment arrangements.

Get a student ID
Hand over your stamped schedule, smile for the camera and they'll give you a student ID, which you need to wear whenever you're on campus.
